Introducing Family Link (Western Bay of Plenty Mental Health Trust.)

Hi, thank you for the opportunity to tell you about our service.

We have providing our service to the Western Bay community for 24 years. We are based in the beautiful Historic Village in Tauranga and the boundaries of our service are Waihi Beach in the North, Otamarakau in the South, and the Kaimai Ranges to the West.

We have two contracts with the Bay of Plenty District Health Board

1. Supporting the Families and Whanau who have a family member who is experiencing mental unwellness:

We have two well trained and competent Fieldworkers who provide support, advocacy, education and resources to families. Referrals can be through self-referral, or from a wide range of referrers such as Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Secondary Service staff, GP’s, NGO providers, PHO’s, schools, community agencies etc.

The service is free, once a Family member has been referred a letter of introduction is posted out and an appointment to meet with a Fieldworker is arranged.

We have a library and a pamphlet area for families to source information.

We run educational workshops during the year and a monthly support group for family members. We produce a monthly newsletter that is free to everyone.

2. Supporting Children, Adolescents and Youth who have a parent or family and whanau member with mental unwellness. (Supporting Parents Healthy Children -  S.P.H.C.)

We support the young people between the ages of 6 to 17 who have a parent or family and whanau member with mental unwellness or addiction. Our support is provided in two ways;

1. One to one support - The one-to-one support is offered one day a week during the school terms and covers an educational component around mental health and addictions, plus some fun The support is offered at schoold during school hours, at the child's home, at our offices or at a place agreed by the child and parent activities.

2. Holiday program - A two day holiday program which is held every school term holidays. This includes further education plus some fun events.

This service is free and the library and pamphlets are also available as a resource.

Referral to the service can be from parents, schools, providers, hospital services, community services etc. Once a child or youth has been referred a letter of introduction is posted out and an appointment to meet with a Fieldworker is arranged.

The prime focus of the holiday program is the opportunity for the children and youth to mix with others who have similar circumstances. To build knowledge, resilience and coping skills together, learn about mental unwellness and addiction, and have fun!!
